Hi all,
I read your article on sanbon in your TKS news section on the website.
I have practiced Karate now for forty odd years and I remember when I first started sanbon was practiced alot.
In the 80's with advent of the more popular competition styles and indeed free style martial arts it became less popular.
In fact the way you describe the practice rang some very familiar bells. Sanbon these days has become a mechanical exercise that is viewed merely as a way of practicing basic technique.
It was pleasing to see someone who obviously understands the value of sanbon in practice. I will await your next post on such subjects as I feel there is real value in these old methods.
Values which have been lost in the pursuit of superior competition effectiveness.
I would be interested in speaking to anyone who feels the same way.
Cheers Jim

Thanks Jim,
Sanbon is a good practice in context. When performed in a timely fashion it provides a good platform for further understanding.
It is easy to get hooked on such methods though and at the risk of teaching granny to do something less useful than she does already one should not become too comfortable.
By this I mean we must always challenge our practice. What am I learning? What does this teach? How can it help me improve? and lets not forget, Did I miss the point?

Hi Feral fish! If memory serves 'sanbon' is just the Japanese meaning 'three things' for example sanbon tsuki - three punches etc.
In our case we just perform an attack or group of attacks three times. The attacks are performed moving forwards and your partner tries to obtain the advantage from judging the timing and rhythmn of the movements.
Hope this is clear ish. for more info check out our TKS News blog and there are a couple of articles relating to our use of sanbon.
Cheers
Chris
