We talk of mind, body and spirit lots in the martil arts. What is meant when we talk about our spirit?

Perhaps this is spirit or you might say a state of mind however, ego is an ever present fear state.
During our recent tourney training sessions I have observed practitioners defending themselves against varying degrees of punishment. Most taking defeat along with success with equal honour. Unfortunately we are all human and once or twice ego has proved an adversary to strong to defeat.
Tourney fighting is a method of seeing ourselves in a raw state. We need to be honest with our strengths and weaknesses. There is little point continuing a match in which you find yourself beaten. Because your opponent has gracefully allowed your escape and controlled his/her urge to lace the living what sits out of you, continuing by striking this person or taking revenge is a weaknesses of greater concern than losing to a better opponent.
The same goes for ignoring the rules on contact agreed or guidelines on less acceptable techniques.
All of this points to an underlining flaw in character needing personal reflection and amendment. Tourney training is about developing your skills but it is as much about developing your mind, body and spirit in the pursuit of an un interruptible state.
A person who is at one with himself/herself is empty yet full at the same time, they are in control of themselves and un hindered by concerns of gain and loss. Accepting defeat is as important as accepting victory you should consider carefully what is it that you have won or lost.
It is all illusion, only a reflection of ego manifest in fear, you must transcend this pattern of thinking if you are to achieve more than just skill.
